Running can be a risky business, especially if you are taking on the challenge of the longer distances of a half marathon and further and sadly injuries are common.

50% or runners get injured every year to the extent that they need to take a break from training. That doesn't include all the little 'niggles' that people ignore and keep on training through.

As a Physiotherapist, it frustrates me that most running injuries are PREVENTABLE!

While some injuries are from slips and trips, sadly most are due to training errors and are avoidable.

There is a lot of conflicting advice about running, especially female specific training. It's difficult to know what to do for the best. Its not surprising that so many people feel confused and overwhelmed.

There are far too many 'arm chair experts' and 'influencers' without any qualifications thinking they can coach people how to run and diagnose and treat injuries just because they've done some running and been injured themself.

Experience doesn't trump qualifications!

Just because I've had lung surgery doesn't mean I'm a cardiothoracic surgeon.

And don't even get me started on AI generated training plans or coaching that know nothing about you, such as your age, sex, medical conditions, life commitments, your training and injury history, or how you are feel and respond as you progress through your training plan.

Nothing beats working with a fully qualified, experienced human. Someone you can actually speak to who can work with you and adapt things as required.

Who Am I and Why Listen to Me?

Nicky Portrait Pic.JPG

I'm Nicky Edwards, a Physiotherapist of almost 20 years. I worked in the NHS and private hospitals before founding Chiltern Physiotherapy in 2018. I was a late bloomer and started running when I was 39 and now I'm a running specialist and crazy ultra runner who loves a race medal and running for charity.

Juggling a business and a young family I mastered the art of training smarter, not harder. I've run 9 marathons including the London marathon 5 times as well as the New York, Chicago and Berlin marathons as I chase the elusive Abbotts Six Star finisher medal. I have been part of the medical team at the London Marathon, so have experienced marathons from both sides of the fence.

I've worked with the London Marathon, speaking at the 'Meet the Experts' day and on the Centre Stage at the Running Show. I speak about how to prevent injuries, marathon training, female specific training, perimenopause and menopause as well as how to stay safe while running.

I wrote the Amazon bestseller 'The Female Runner's Advantage' to help women train smarter, not harder.

As females, to get the maximum benefit from our training and reach our full potential our training and nutrition should be designed to work in harmony with our female hormones and physiology.

This is especially important for females age 40+ as our female sex hormones and the health benefits they give us decline. After the age of 40 we need to adapt our training to accommodate our changing hormones. The training and nutrition strategies that worked for us in our 20s and 30s are no longer ideal. â€‹

I trawl through the research and the scientific jargon so that you don't have to. I provide science backed running related advice on training, nutrition and injury prevention and rehabilitation.

I volunteer for the charity Children with Cancer UK supporting over 1200 marathon runners to ensure everyone gets to the start line of the London Marathon every year.
